June 30th, 2008 (Day 6)

(10:10 a.m.) - Athens Time

Liz woke up really early again today. What is so wrong with sleeping? Is it a crime to sleep in? regardless, I am excited about today. My sunburn is a lot better today. We are getting off the boat around noon and then going on a guided bus tour of Athens since the port we are stopping in is 40 minutes from Athens.

We are going to see the Acropolis and other things around town. We should be back on the boat by 5:00 p.m. or 6:00 p.m. if we don’t get off for shopping. Should be fun day.

(1:15 p.m.) - Athens Time

On Deck 4, we met for our guided tour of Athens in the theater. It was chaos! They really didn’t have anything really organized or they were doing a piss poor job of it. We didn’t leave the boat until after 1:30 p.m., so that was really going to cut our time short in Athens.
We got on a tour bus where a guy promptly tried to sell us post cards. Who buys those things anymore? In this digital age, you can stuff better on your phone or camera or do you really need to send post cards anymore? E-mail works just fine. But, the tour bus took of and we had a quick bus tour of Athens toward the Acropolis.

Once, we got to the Acropolis, we got off the bus and the tour guide gave us water and towels for our trek up to the Acropolis. It wasn’t a hard walk, but we stopped a lot for the tour guide to talk to us. It was really hot out. Probably around 93 degrees in the middle of the day and it just got hotter as we went up the hill. It was, however worth the trip because the views of Athens were breathtaking. The Parthenon was amazing too! I’m really glad we went to see it. The tour guide did talk too much, so we only had about 30 minutes of free time to take pictures and make our way down the hill.

When we got back on the bus, it was always unassigned seating unless you left something on the bus. So, we grabbed whatever assigned seats we felt like. Soon, a guy and his wife got on and the guy said to me:

“I think you are in our seats.”

Being hot and tired, what I should have said was:

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know, we’ll move.”

What I did say:

“Does it really matter?!?!” (Hands thrown up in the air.)

Again, I was hot and tired and I think it really took him by surprise and he got shut down by the comment and muttered, “Well, it does matter…” But, he wandered off and found another seat, one of the many available. Later, we stopped at a quick shop for tourist shopping and I saw him eating two ice cream cones at the same time, that fat f*&k! Liz and I just had to buy some sunscreen because we were out.
After the stop for that one shop we continued our city tour with a stop at the Olympic Stadium, the parliament, and some other things around town that would be cool to see if we had more time, but we didn’t. The bus let people off to go shopping at the plaza, but you had to back on the boat by 6:30 p.m. and it was 5:30 p.m. by then. We got back to the boat by 6:00 p.m.

(11:00 p.m.) - Athens Time

We ad room service delivered to our room for a snack because we didn’t have lunch. We had an awesome chili dip that hit the spot. After that, we cleaned up and went to dinner, no wait, drinks. I have been drinking a lot of Bud Light because it’s cheap ($4.50 a bottle).
We wend to dinner that was casual night, thank god, because I hate dressing up. I had the sea scallop risotto, lamb shank, and another sugar-free cake. Liz had the antipasto salad, lamb shank, and tiramisu. The lamb was kind of disappointing. The waiters also sang songs at the end of dinner. Then, we went to bed to have energy for Mykonos tomorrow…
